A leading Trafford Labour politician has announced additional financial support for the borough’s Ukrainian sponsors who will receive an extra £100 to help with the rising cost of living.

Cllr James Wright, the local authorities, Executive Member for Housing and Neighbourhoods, has unveiled plans to financially assist the borough’s Ukrainian hosts with the monthly cash boost.

The initial agreement was that the sponsors would open their homes to those fleeing the war in Ukraine for a minimum period of six months.

However, as we approach the end of that term, and as a huge thank you, the sponsors could receive an additional £100 on top of a monthly payment of £350, as they continue to offer their homes as a place of refuge.

Cllr Wright, who represents Bucklow St. Martins ward, said Trafford Labour’s support for those seeking help from the atrocities taking place in Ukraine will always be unwavering.

He added: “Firstly, I would like to thank every single sponsor for opening, not just their homes, but their hearts in a bid to assist those fleeing their war-torn country.

“I’m hopeful that this additional money will go some way to help those who have so selflessly welcomed Ukrainian families into their lives.

“I’m also optimistic, as we all struggle through this avalanche of a cost of living crisis, that this additional funding will help towards some of the financial burdens our amazing sponsors may also be currently experiencing.

“I cannot thank you all enough for everything you have done to protect those who have found themselves in such desperate need for help.”

Trafford welcomed the Ukrainian refugees with open arms when they first arrived in the borough.

And as a consequence, was able to home 320 Ukrainians in more than 140 households, as a direct result of the Homes for Ukraine Scheme.

An army of volunteers also worked hard behind the scenes through the Trafford community hub scheme to support the new arrivals.
