Longford Labour councillors have welcomed £180k cash injection to add to existing improvements to a much-loved park within their ward.

Longford Park will benefit from the extra funding which will be used to pay for several green infrastructure projects.

The funding – commonly known as S106 money – is a result of Trafford Council’s planning team imposing financial conditions on the developer who built homes on the former Itron factory site.

A multi-million-pound scheme to transform Longford Park has already been given the green light, thanks to Trafford Council’s successful £3m National Lottery Heritage Fund bid.

The authority will match fund the restoration project costing more than £6m.

Cllrs Sarah Haughey, Dave Jarman, and Judith Lloyd expressed their delight at the news and said the money will go towards swathe of improvements already planned for the area.

Cllr Jarman said: “It is great news that Longford Park has secured more funding to pay towards the transformation of this much-loved green space.

“It is crucial that we invest in our parks so that residents can benefit from being outdoors in a safe and welcoming environment.

“The funding will be put to excellent use, and I look forward to working alongside community groups to make visiting the park even more special.”

The park is in a designated conservation area, which was owned by John and Enriqueta Rylands who lived at Longford Hall and who also built Stretford Public Hall.

Plans to develop the park include a new learning, training, and volunteering hub and improved sport and recreational facilities incorporating a new BMX course and revamped sports courts and play areas.

Proposals also include the redesign of features such as the former Longford Hall site and gardens, a revamped Pets’ Corner, the de-culverting of Longford Brook, plus new footpaths, seating, lighting, and multi-media interpretation.

Work is expected to start on site in autumn 2024.
