Leading Labour politicians have welcomed a cash injection of almost £20m to transform Partington Sports Village.

The money has been awarded to Trafford Council in the latest round of Levelling Up Funding – and will be used to revitalise the leisure facility.

The multimillion-pound investment will deliver a raft of much-needed improvements and make a huge difference to the ageing building.

Work to improve other leisure facilities across the borough is already underway – and this latest cash boost will form part of the Labour administration’s Leisure Strategy, and corporate priority, in a bid to reduce health inequalities across the borough.

Cllr Adele New, Lead Member for Education, said she welcomed the investment, which she says will make a significant difference to the area.

Cllr New, who represents Bucklow St. Martins Ward, added: “Since taking control of the Council in 2018, it has been a priority for my Labour colleagues to improve the health and well-being of all Trafford residents.

“Investment of this magnitude is not only welcome but is absolutely necessary if we are going to support people and help them make healthier and more fulfilling life choices.”

Plans include:

  • A full refurbishment of the site
  • Providing a BMX track with storage and repair facilities
  • Renovating the changing rooms at Cross Lane, which includes boxing facilities and serves the six football pitches
  • A path around the park to encourage walking and running

Cllr James Wright, Executive member for Housing and Neighbourhoods, said: “I have no doubt that local residents will be blown away by the number of new facilities that will be available to them.

“I firmly believe that there will be something for everyone to enjoy regardless of age and ability.

“However, I look forward to more investment in the area, such as better transport infrastructure, housing, helping people out of poverty while providing secure jobs and training schemes, which is exactly Trafford Labour’s vision for the future.”

Cllr Aidan Williams, Executive Member for Climate Change and Transport Strategy also welcomed the move labelling the decision to invest in Partington as a ‘breakthrough’.

“If we are going t make any headway in improving the health and well-being of al Trafford residents then investment of this standard and quality is the only way forward,” said Cllr Williams.

“This project is nothing short of a breakthrough for all Partington residents who will gain so much from these fantastic facilities once completed.

“Similar to my colleagues, I firmly believe that additional investment is needed in the area such as sustainable and affordable transport links and housing.”
