Bold and innovative plans to deliver The House Project that will help young care leavers successfully transition into independent living have been backed by Trafford Labour Group.

The initiative aims to give young people the skills and support they need to live an independent, positive and prosperous life.

The pioneering scheme will also provide a pathway for young people to acquire safe, secure and affordable homes with additional support for their health and wellbeing.

Trafford Council’s deputy leader, Cllr Catherine Hynes, Executive member for Children’s Services, described the initiative as ‘groundbreaking’ and said The House Project will be such a positive opportunity to young lives.

She added: “Leaving home for the first time is a daunting period for anyone, but more so for teenagers who may not have the support of their family and friends.

“This project will help care leavers embark on their journey into adulthood with the confidence and skills they need.

“The promise of a safe and secure home with a supportive network can only lead to successful outcomes for everyone involved – and I’m proud we are offering this groundbreaking initiative in Trafford.”

The project, which has been hailed a huge success in other parts of the UK, forms part of the National House Project (NHP), which is a registered charity funded by the Department of Education.

Trafford will collaborate with other Greater Manchester authorities to kick-start the scheme, which is just one of a range of supportive measures for care leavers in Trafford.

Young people will be selected to take part through their willingness to engage and benefit from the project, while also agreeing to complete an accredited skills programme.

As well as providing such a positive step towards independence for care leavers, it is also expected that the project will save the authority thousands of pounds in supported and residential accommodation each year.
