Labour executives have approved the adoption of Trafford Council’s ‘Design Code’ meaning it will now be used as an official supplementary planning document.

The purpose of the code is to enable the authority to elevate design standards in order to bring forward new high-quality developments.

Members of the authority’s Executive Committee agreed the report on Monday.

Cllr Liz Patel, Executive Member for Economy and Regeneration, described the code as a significant piece of work which is already having a positive impact on the quality of local regeneration.

She said finalising the Design Code marked the conclusion of two years planning policy development, which can be accessed, viewed and navigated online.

She added: “The Design Code will help shape the kind of places where residents want to live, work, and spend quality time.

“It will also help to deliver more accessible, sustainable and well-designed developments.”

Cllr Patel continued: “Planning is one of the most significant interfaces between our residents, developers and the council.

“As we approach the future with our ambitious housing plans, we can confidently say that quality will be at the heart of the proposals.

“Approval of the code marks an exciting and inspirational step for Trafford’s planning service.”

A majority of the code was produced by Trafford Council’s planning team – who have been invited to showcase the document to the Royal Town Planning Institute, Planning Advisory Service and the Design Council.

The code will also be considered alongside national, regional and local planning policies.

Deputy Leader, Cllr Cath Hynes, Executive Member for Leisure, Arts, Culture and Heritage, said: “I want to congratulate Cllr Patel and all the planning officers who have been involved in preparing the design guide.

“Everyone should be proud of this huge piece of work, which will have a positive impact on Trafford’s future.

“I particularly want to welcome the work around inclusivity and accessibility. It is a major step forward in terms of making our borough more accessible.”
