Old Trafford Sports Barn could receive a series of alterations after Labour executives agreed the facility can become the subject of a Community Asset Transfer (CAT).
The building, located in Seymour Park, currently offers a range of sport and leisure facilities including early years provision.
Trafford Leisure currently run the centre on behalf of the council.
However, a report, which detailed the exciting plans for the future of the Sports Barn was tabled by Deputy Leader, Cllr Cath Hynes during a recent meeting.
The new venture, which includes a partnership between UA92, and local organisation, Positive Community Spaces – Old Trafford, could see the facility let for a 25 year-term.
The vision is for both parties to use their professional knowledge and influence to increase the community’s usage while providing improved access to sport, leisure and educational facilities.
A significant part of the plan is to reach inactive sections of the community and attract them to engage in more physical activities.
In addition, access to early years provision will remain in place.
Cllr Hynes, Executive Member for Leisure, Arts, Culture and Heritage, said exciting times lay ahead for the sports barn.
She added: “The future looks bright for this great community asset – and I’m looking forward to seeing the plans expand and develop.
“I’m also pleased that the work will be carried out in a phased structure that will include community engagement at each stage.
“We have a duty to make sure the plans meet the needs of the community.”
The results from a previous consultation revealed the community would like the facility to offer a café, fitness classes, sport and creative sessions.
