Trafford Town Hall will be bathed in purple light this evening, in a gesture of solidarity with George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter campaign, council leader Andrew Western has said.

The unarmed black security guard died in Minneapolis, United States, after being forcibly held down by police officers, last week.

A video showed the 46-year-old saying he was in pain and couldn’t breathe while being restrained before he died.

Cllr Western said: “Trafford will stand in solidarity with black, Asian and minority ethnic communities around the world tonight as we light the town hall purple to remember George Floyd.

“The video in my view clearly depicts the unlawful killing of a defenceless, handcuffed man and is one of the most vile and heartbreaking images I’ve ever seen.

“Justice must be served for this man and his family, and we must all stand together to continue to challenge racism, hatred and bigotry in all its forms.”
